Breeding Philosophy

It is my belief that a high quality pedigree does not guarantee a successful animal, but it does improve your odds of producing that quality animal, while providing some consistency within your herd. It has been said that established bloodlines do not always create winners, but winners always have established bloodlines.

The study of genetic lineage is the most exciting part of the breeding for me, as I enjoy experimenting within the bloodlines to try and produce that perfect animal. As a breeder, I am a strong believer that the bottom side of the pedigree provides approximately 70% of the animal characteristic. Therefore I have concentrated on developing high quality females and use established stallions and bulls through artificial insemination.  We also pasture breed with high quality bulls, but do not retain stallions.

If you notice in my horse broodmare lines, I have specialized in a certain bloodline, believing that the “Doc Quixote” X “Money from Home” cross on the bottom side, combined with today's Smart Little Lena stud lineages, provides winning results in the cutting arena.

In the cattle bloodlines, I tend to favor the Butler and Wright family influences, believing they seem to provide the right combination of horn, confirmation and the hybrid vigor I like in my cattle. The specialized broodmares and blended foundation cows throughout both my programs, center around the first and second generation females in the bottom side pedigree that have produced successful offspring.  In our future offspring, through selective mating, we expect these superior genetic characteristics to carry forward.
